The application of capsule filling machine in the food industry originated as a downstream equipment extension of pharmaceutical machinery. Capsule filling in the food industry actually falls into two categories; please do not confuse them:

2. Soft Capsule/Liquid Capsule Sealing (Capsule Cups, Nespresso-compatible Coffee Capsule Cups): Jelly, pudding, yogurt capsule cups, coffee espresso granules, jam capsules, using a filling + heat sealing/ultrasonic sealing + capping line, 100~500 cups/minute.

The production line sequence is typically: Capsule feeding/cup supply → Quantitative filling (screw/volume/ceramic pump) → Cap closing or sealing → Online weighing and waste removal → Polishing/drying → Counting and bottling or blister packing. In food factories, high-volume coffee capsule lines are directly connected to shrink wrapping and palletizing at the rear.

II. Technological Evolution: From "Modified Pharmaceutical Machines" to "Food-Grade Dedicated Machines"

1. Materials and Hygiene: Contact parts have been upgraded from 304 to 316L stainless steel, with the addition of food-grade lubrication, CIP cleaning interfaces, and gelatin containers with nitrogen protection to prevent moisture absorption—this is a crucial requirement for food factories to meet HACCP standards.

2. Differentiation in Metering Methods:

Powders: Screw metering (±3%) → Servo screw metering + online weighing feedback (±1%~2%).

Liquids/Semi-fluids: Traditional mechanical pumps → Ceramic pumps + servo drives, resistant to fruit and vegetable acids and coffee oils, with a fill volume difference within ±2%.

3. Increased Speed ​​Range: Food contract manufacturers use medium-speed machines (10,000~30,000 capsules/hour) (fast changeover, inexpensive); major coffee capsule manufacturers use continuous rotary machines (200,000 capsules/hour and above).

4. Enhanced Visual and Traceability: AI visual inspection detects cracks/missing capsules/misaligned seals, with a miss rate of <0.1%; batch number (SN) is linked to MES, and e-commerce customized packaging also requires traceability.

III. Specific Pain Points in the Food Sector (Different from Pharmaceuticals)

Materials are "Difficult": Coffee powder is prone to static electricity and bridging; probiotic powder is lightweight; flavoring powder contains oil and easily sticks to the screw. Using general pharmaceutical machines directly will cause blockages; a spiral-shaped filler and vibration breaker are needed.

Capsule shells need to be "edible": HPMC plant-based capsules and starch capsules have higher acceptance in the food sector than gelatin (halal/vegetarian labels), but they are brittle and sensitive to temperature and humidity. Capsule separation requires vacuum adsorption instead of mechanical ejectors.

SKUs are more fragmented than in pharmaceuticals: The same contract manufacturer may fill collagen in the morning and coffee extract powder in the afternoon. A 15-30 minute changeover time is the minimum; rapid mold changeover and parameterized formulation are key to closing deals.

IV. Future Directions in the Next 3-5 Years

1. Continued Expansion of "Capsule-based" Food Products: From coffee/probiotics to concentrated soup base capsules, tea concentrate granules, pre-mixed alcohol capsules, and pet nutrition granules. Equipment needs to be compatible with four filling heads: powder, granules, liquid, and microcapsules.

2. Biodegradable Shell Compatibility: For increased production of plant cellulose and sodium alginate capsules, the equipment needs to be adapted to softer, more deformable shell materials, requiring readjustment of vacuum separation and closing pressure.

3. Small-Batch Offline Operation: E-commerce customized packaging (minimum order 2000 capsules) has spurred the development of desktop/compact servo filling machines that are plug-and-play and decoupled from the main production line.

4. Instant Coding During Filling: Internal codes are laser-etched before capsule sealing, or QR codes are sprayed onto the sealing film, enabling "one code per capsule" marketing traceability.

5. Digital Twin Testing: Before launching new SKUs, filling 

 simulations are run on a virtual line, reducing downtime for model changes to within 10 minutes.
